From Lecture Halls to Hustle: The Inspiring Story of Haggai, the Student Entrepreneur of Kibabii University
Haggai juma a second-year student at Kibabii University pursuing Bachelor degrees in education whose story is quietly inspiring many comrade around him.
Like many other university students across Kenya, Haggai receives HELB funds to support his education. But instead of using all the money for his day-to-day expenses, he made a difrent decision that many students talk about but few ever attempt. He chose to invest part of his HELB loan into a small business .
While others saw temporary comfort in spending the money, Haggai saw an opportunity. He wanted more than just surviving campus life; he wanted to build something that would support him long after the semester ended.
With determination and a clear vision, Haggai purchased wholesale plastic utensils—plates, cups, buckets, basins, containers, and more. He noticed that many students living around Kibabii University frequently needed affordable household items, especially at the start of a new semester.
Running a business while pursuing a academic program is not easy, but Haggai has learned the art of balance. His mornings often start early as he checks stock, interacts with suppliers, and sets up his display. By late morning, he shifts and becomes the student he isattending lectures, taking notes, and participating in group discussions. (Class rep)
In the evenings and weekends, he returns to his business, serving students looking for items to furnish their hostels or replace what they’ve lost or broken. His dedication has earned him a reputation: “That hardworking guy at the gate Hagguzo jay .”
Of course, the journey hasn’t been smooth. Some days, sales are low. Sometimes suppliers delay. There are moments when balancing schoolwork and business feels overwhelming. But Haggai refuses to give up.He reminds himself why he started.
His determination proves that with courage, discipline, and hard work, a student can build a dream even while sitting in a lecture hall.
