From Graduation Gown to Barber’s Cape: The Story of Salim Senior

When Salim Senior walked across the corridor at Multimedia University, cheesing his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, he imagined a future filled with newsrooms, interviews, and bylines. Like many young dreamers, he pictured himself chasing stories, shaping narratives, and giving a voice to the unheard. But life suddenly changed after his graduation

After graduation, Salim sent out countless applications to media houses across the country. He polished his CV, refreshed his portfolio, and attended every interviews  could find. Still, weeks turned into months, and months turned   into a year. The job market was tight, opportunities were limited, and journalism openings seemed to need five years’ experience for an entry-level role but it was difficult because he was just a graduate.

With bills piling up and responsibilities knocking at the door every day , Salim started feeling the pressure  from many graduates colleagues .

One afternoon, while visiting a friend’s kinyozi in his neighborhood around kibabii university, Salim watched the steady flow of customers walking in and out and he was really interested with that.
His friend, noticing Salim’s interest, offered to teach him the basics of barbering. What started as curiosity quickly turned into passion. Salim discovered that barbering wasn’t just about cutting hair—it was about listening, connecting, transforming.

With some little support from his parents Salim invested in his own clippers around kibabiiuniversity. He set up a small corner in his estate, offering affordable but high-quality cuts.

Today, Salim is known as “Senior the Barber,” a name spoken proudly by his comrade customes . He makes a decent living, supports himself, and even mentors other young  journalist  and other youths searching for a direction.
